Essential Information: Cafayate is the main town in the Calchaqui Valley. It has a population of about 11,000 people. The bus station is near the central plaza. The town is 1,600 meters above sea level. The town is famous for producing torrontes wine.

Recommended tourist sites and activities: In town the main attractions are the several bodegas that are open to the public. For a small fee you can sample several vintage wines. Other places of interest in the city include the Cathedral and the Artisan's Market.

Outside of town is the famous Quebrada de las Conchas, a series of beautiful and strange rock formations. You can catch a bus there and cycle back, or catch the bus back. It also possible to visit the Quilmes ruins from Cafayate.
