Humahuaca

Essential Information: The bus station is on the corner of Belgrano and Entre Rios. Humahuaca is a village populated mostly by Quechuan people. It's easy to find your way around. Hostal Humahuaca is a five minute walk from the bus stop. Bring plenty of money with you. You might find an ATM that works. travellers' cheques definitely won't be of any use.

Recommended Sights and Activities: In the centre of the village is the Cabildo (Town Hall) with a clock tower. At noon every day a life size figure of Saint Franciso Solano emerges from the clock tower and makes the sign of the cross. On the main plaza is the beautiful Iglesia de la Candelaria and the impressive Independence Monument with a statue of an indigenous man. There are various trails around the village where you can get a feel for the incredible scenery. Near by is the beautiful village of Purmamarca which is famous for a hill containing seven bands of colour. Other places nearby of interest include the remote village of Iruya, the pre-Columbian ruins of Coctaca and the martian landscape of the Quebrada de Humahuaca.

Humahuaca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and rightly so.
