Hostel Independencia is easily the most beautiful hostel in Mendoza. It is in a restored mansion that was built in 1910. It is located on Plaza Independencia, about 1.5kms from the bus terminal and 2.5kms from Parque General San Martin.

The hostel has 7-bed mixed dorms, a guest use kitchen, security lockers, bicycle hire, free breakfast and a huge patio area.

There's a bar in Hostel Independencia but the hostel hasn't degenerated into a loud 'party hostel' with lousy service and dirty sheets. The staff are friendly and the place remains immaculately clean. I enjoyed staying in the hostel.

To save money stay at Parque Suizo campsite which is about 6km northwest of town on Avenue Champagnat (tel: 0261 4441991 www.campingsuizo.com.ar). It has a swimming pool, outdoor cinema, swimming pool, hot showers and a grocery store.
