Music in Argentina

Argentines love music. The number one music is salsa. On any weekend millions of people gather at bars and clubs to dance to salsa music.

Salsa, however, is not the only flavour on offer. In northern Argentina musica folklorica is popular. This is the traditional music of the indigenous peoples of the Andes which combines guitars with pan pipes to make the distinctive sound popularised by Simon and Garfunkel's "El Condor Pasa".

Of course in the more cosmopolitan cities the youth listen to rock, dance, 60s and the myriad other styles pioneered in the USA and Europe.

Buenos Aires is unique in being the city of tango. The debate rages as to whether Carlos Gardel was Argentine or Uruguyan. What is not in doubt is that portenos (inhabitants of Buenos Aires) love tango. They even have tango taxis.

Charly Garcia is Argentina's most famous rock star. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs won a grammy in 1998 for best alternative latin rock act. Other popular contemporary bands include Bersuit Vergarabat, Los Natas and Gazpacho.
