Salta bus station is near the town centre. It is fine to walk there during the day. The airport is 9 kms southwest of town. It has services to Buenos Aires and Santa Cruz in Bolivia. Cambio Dinar (Mitre 101) changes cash and travellers' cheques.
Salta is in cowboy country. I was there in June and there were cowboy parties at night with music, food and drink and there was a big parade through town of 100s of mounted cowboys. There's plenty of colonial architecture to admire including the and on Plaza 9 de Julio, the with its high towers and the with its hand carved carob tree wood doors. The has a collection of Inca artifacts and there are interesting paintings to view at the . Finally, there's which you can walk up or take the cable car (teleferico).
The nightlife centres around Balcarce Street. |
