Ushuaia

Essential Information: Ushuaia which means 'the bay that looks east' in the Yamana language is at the end of the world. If you want to go further south then you are going to the Falklands or to Antartica. Even in the summer Ushuaia is cold (between 12 and 14 degrees centigrade on average). Ushuaia airport is 4km south of town. A taxi to the airport costs about $7. The departure tax is $6.50. There is no bus terminal in Ushuaia (see travel); most buses arrive and depart from the car park on Av. Maipu, near the tourist information center. There are various places to change cash and traveller's cheques on the main street, Av. San Martin.

Recommended Sights and Activities: Just being at the end of the world is amazing. The town is surrounded by mountains and the silence of vast spaces. In town there's the Museo del Fin del Mundo with information about the indigenous people of the area and there's Museos Maritimo & Presidio that deals with the maritime history of the town and also the history of prisoners in the locality. A short taxi ride or hour walk away is the trail up the mountain to Martial Glacier. To get to Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego you can catch the expensive steam train or a minibus (see travel). There is also a popular boat trip down the Beagle Channel and 27kms from Ushuaia is the ski resort of Cerro Castor. Finally, Ushuaia is the staging post for lots of expeditions to the Falkland Islands and Antartica. See the adventure section for more information.
